Xavier García Cardona

He was born in Calella (Barcelona) in 1991, beginning his studies in Piano and Music Theory in Escola de Música Victòria Geli, and later graduating in Orchestra Conducting from Conservatori Superior del Liceu. He has further developed his training with courses and masterclasses throughout Spain and Europe with masters such as Manel Valdivieso, Francesc Prat, Guerassim Voronkov, Enrique García Asensio, Peter Fender, Karl Anton Rickenbacher, Mireia Barrera, Johann Djuick, Josep Vila or Philip Lawson, among others.

He has also sung in quality choirs such as Cor Bruckner Barcelona, Orfeó Català, Bach Zum Mitsingen, Cor de la Universitat Ramon Llull, Cor Jove Nacional de Catalunya or Joven Coro de Andalucía, among others. Furthermore, he participated twice in Eurochoir and was selected to take part in the World Youth Choir, becoming one of the few young Spanish singers to have been selected for both projects.

He has conducted orchestras such as Jove Ensemble de Barcelona, Orquestra Barroca de Barcelona, Jove Orquestra Barcino, Ensemble Liceu XXI and Òpera Jove, with whom he toured Catalan theatres and concert halls with the operas L’Impresario in angustie (2015) and Il Convito (2017).

Xavier has recorded works of the Catalan composer Jaume Aguilar with Audiovisuals de Sarrià: “Música i paraules” (2016) and “Música i paraules 2” (2020).

At present he is the main conductor of Quòdlibet Grup Coral and Cor Tessàlia and he has been the main conductor of Coral Esclat, Cor Diaula and Cor Ariadna de l’Agrupació Cor Madrigal. He was also one of the founders and main conductors of Revoice International Vocal Ensemble, which has performed in Serbia, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland and Turkey, taking part in great events and festivals such as World Expo Milano 2015, Europa Cantat, International Choir Festival Graz (“ Voices of Spirit”) or the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT).

In 2016, the European Festival of Youth Choirs Basel granted him a scholarship to participate in the “Start Up for Young Conductors” programme, within the festival. In the field of composition, he has made several premieres of his works for choir, piano and voice, winning the 1st prize in the National Choral Composition Competition Universidad de Burgos (2016) for the piece Galatea, the 3rd prize in the Choral Composition Competition for choirs “BAE” Gran Premio BBK (2019) for the piece Canción de cuna (2019), and the 3rd prize in the International Composition Contest Universidad de Alcalá (2021) for the work In Paradisum. Some of these compositions have been performed around Europe and America, and some are published by Brotons & Mercadal.

Among others, choirs that have sung his works are Cor Albada de l’Agrupació Cor Madrigal, Cor Ariadna de l’Agrupació Cor Madrigal, Cor Tessàlia, Orfeó Català, Cor Madrigal, Quòdlibet Grup Coral, Orfeó Nova Solsona, Cor Bruckner Barcelona, Revoice International Vocal Ensemble, Linzer Jeunessechor or Konzertchor Darmstadt.

In 2022 and 2023 he has different commissions in Catalunya, País Vasco and Castilla y León.

pianist and teacher

As a pianist he has been finalist in the Extraordinary Prize of Conservatori Superior del Liceu and semi-finalist in Les Corts International Contest, both in the chamber music category. He has played as an accompanist pianist in different concerts throughout Catalonia and Spain, performing in concert halls such as Auditori (Barcelona), Palacio de los Olvidados (Granada) or Auditorio (El Ejido). As a repetiteur Xavier has collaborated with Òpera Jove and Amics de l’Òpera de Sarrià, among others.

He has been teaching piano, Music Theory and choir in Escola de Música Victòria Geli of Calella, Escola de Música del Palau (Barcelona), as a substitute teacher, and Musicàrea Escola de música. Currently he is teaching piano and Music Theory in Acadèmia Barcelona Concertante, where he is also a repetiteur.

Xavier is a member of the artistic committee of the Federació de Corals Joves de Catalunya and organizer of the first Catalan Youth Choirs Festival. He is the artistic director of the chamber music season “Estones de Clàssica” in Ateneu of Sant Just Desvern. Furthermore, he is a member and partner of the Asociación Española de Directores de Coro (AEDCORO).
